OK, as stated on other pages, I'm not a health
professional or athlete...
But, I'm very interested in eating healthy food.
Feel free to check out the COOKERY
page!
I just wanted to take a very quick look at two
subjects; 1. Weight loss. 2. Vegetarianism.
1. Weight
loss.
In this modern world -
particularly in the West - we are surrounded by mountains of
food!
A lot of it is heavily processed too. Many of us lead
sedentary lives - in part due to our "day jobs".
Its no wonder that many of us -
at one time or other - have gained a bit of weight!
So- speaking from personal experience - I can tell you - there
is a very good way to lose weight!
Its called the keto (short for
"ketogenic") diet...
The basic idea is this; cut out most/all carbohydrates and
sugar. Eat plenty of (good) fats.
Then whenever you are active - instead of burning carbs for
fuel - eventually,
your body will start to burn fat instead!I was always
very thin until about age 30...
Then came a little belly. I was never very overweight -
but never felt comfortable with having a bit of a belly.
So in the last few years - I have tried the "keto" diet a few
times...
All I can say is - it works! Personally, I would not
like to stay on it long term.
But in the 6 weeks since the start of 2022, I lost 8kg!
One interesting aspect of it - is a thing called "Bulletproof
coffee".
I had this every morning - and then did some exercise 3
- 5 times weekly -
So without further ado - here
are a few links!
Please note; if you have any health issues -
please consult your doctor before trying any diet.
I was surprised recently to find out I had high LDL
cholesterol -(after keto hhmm?!)
so my advice - is to check your blood regularly
- to see if anything is causing you health issues...
Finally, another popular system these days is
known as the 16:8 diet...
Basically, you have an 8 hour eating window - and 16
hour fast.
I am occasionally doing this - and find its useful...
16:8
diet
2. Vegetarianism.
Growing up in West Cork - we grew a lot of our
own veg -
and raised some farm animals...its hard work - but very
rewarding!
So, the ethical question, of eating meat...
I've killed turkeys for Christmas dinner.
I've taken animals to the slaughter house- I've seen
what actually happens in there...
This had a big effect on me. I have always felt
very uncomfortable eating meat.
Yes, I know - meat is delicious, and some people think its
healthy for you/energy dense...
I have been vegetarian on and off for nearly 20 years. As far as I can see, it just naturally feels wrong to eat animals... We all naturally love puppies and kittens - and little chicks etc - but the cultural conditioning - and advertising we are all used to, drowns out the sound of our own conscience...
There are some interesting vids on youtube -
where carnivores - don't always eat herbivores!
Nature doesn't always have to be "red in tooth and claw"!
